here's some honesty:
-over the weekend joony found an ant trap behind our couch and started munching on it. when i looked closely at what was in his hands i started panicking and shaking and maybe feeling a little asthmatic. i had visions of stomach pumping and overnight hospital stays in my head. then i called poison control and the man on the phone was so nice. "how much does he weigh? wow, 25 lbs, congratulations on such a healthy 9 month old! you're a great mom, i can tell! don't worry at all about the ant trap. he'd have to ingest 10 of those to even worry, and it doesn't sound like he ingested anything. you've got a curious guy on your hands. that means he's smart! good for you!!" i mean really, what poison control worker is that nice? maybe it was over the top, but in that moment, i desperately needed to hear those things.
-last week i only made dinner ONCE. david-friendly (gluten-/dairy-free) meal ideas are hard to come by. any recipes you want to send my way would be so appreciated.
-i get really discouraged with running sometimes. it doesn't feel like it's getting easier. i'll get all psyched up for a run. "two miles! let's go! i can totally do this, i am strong, i am lean, i'm a runner! one month until race day!" and then a half mile in i'm all, "cookies. diet coke. couch. running is for skinny people who hate themselves."
-i've been a really terrible sport about working in the nursery at church. it makes for a rowdy two hours that doesn't allow for much reflection or, although it's not what church is about, meeting new friends (which i desperately want to do). last sunday, though, the kids in the nursery were so darned cute and when i held up a picture of Jesus and asked if anyone knew who it was, one little girl shouted, "deesus chrise our saver!" (interpreted, that's "Jesus Christ our Savior!" oh, and another boy seriously said, "um..my Dad?" ha!) anyways, consider me humbled.

As for dairy free/gluten free meal ideas, look for "paleo" or "primal" recipes. I have to follow the same dairy free/gluten free rules, and I always find tasty things that way. Some of my favorite websites are....

There are some great books out there too, but the websites are free. :)
and good job calling poison control. even if it was nothing, you did the right thing to call.
Awesome! Thank you so much, Anne! I will definitely check those out.
DeleteAnd thanks for the affirmation, it's so easy to feel like every other mom is always on top of things and I'm the one making these dumb mistakes! I have to remember that EVERYONE messes up from time to time, even if I don't know about it.
i love spaghetti squash, seriously cut it in half microwave for 3 min or untill soft then use a fork and scrap off then add sauce veggies/meat. yummy fast meal!
ReplyDeletei also love quinoa. ill use veggie broth instead of h2o and add any veggies i have. let it all cook together! yum!
no bake energy bites! so easy and good if you have a sweet tooth

hope that helps!
Ooh, I seriously might try that tonight! That helps SO much. Thanks, Ashley!
DeleteHey Brandilyn! I'm a runner too - have been forever. Don't get discouraged, I always go in and out of strugglesome (is that a word) times. Work on teenie tiny goals - when you're dying just say ok 15 more seconds then reasses how close to dying you are (being dramatic) and if you're not actually dying set another tiny goal! It can be a real challenge...especially on a treadmill. Not too easy to zone out that way. Do you listen to music? Watch tv? Try different things! How long is your race?
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ali! I'm gearing up for a 10K in a month. When I'm at the track or outside (rarely) I like my music but at home when I'm staring at the wall it drives me a little crazy! So I've started watching a movie or shows on Hulu. Thanks for the encouragement and ideas--it's so appreciated!
DeleteI did the same thing with that skirt when I saw it in e's post! Also I second spaghetti squash, it is a go-to meal here. I poke the whole squash a few times, and then pop it in the oven for an hour or so, until you can poke it easily, then cut in half, scrape the seeds, and then use a for to scrape the flesh. So yummy, and even my kids love it!
ReplyDeletegosh i used to be a runner, i wanted to be skinny, but then the sidewalks got covered by ice and i got way too discouraged. however, i want to take it back up, i'm hoping once i get an internship set i can stop wasting time and spend my extra time running.
ReplyDeletealso, sorry about the scary run in with joony, since i'm in public health and i've learned a thing or two about poison i feel like i shouldn't be freaked out in a situation like that but i would totally be freaking out. glad he is ok.
K
I know what you mean about sidewalks covered in ice! I was bound and determined to run all winter once but once it dropped below 20 and got slippery out there...ah, NO. Good luck getting back into running! I'm learning quickly that the key is just sticking to it.
DeleteAnd...I'm sure you'll be calm, cool, and collected in a situation like the one I was in!
Super cute! Love that skirt-has a nice 1950's feel to it (love that era! Wish I had more!)
ReplyDeleteLOL! Wow, that poison control guy WAS nice! But I would've freaked too-yuck!
Nursery is always kind of exhausting for me too-but yeah, they're so cute! Last week we were singing "Jesus loves me" and a little girl who doesn't talk very much started singing it (similar to another language, but still..) it was so cute!
Oh, almost forgot! I saw this pin on Pinterest that totally sounded like me (and you maybe..?*GRIN*) it had a lady lifting weights and said "My routine is an hour and a half.......15 min. of cardio, 15 minutes of strength training.....and 60 minutes of talking myself into it!" LOL!

ha! that's EXACTLY how it is! especially when combined with the eternity it seems to take to get dressed. get my treadmill/computer/baby monitor/water all set up...yikes!
DeleteHaha! Georgia always points out Jesus in pictures and any other man in the painting is "daddy. " even though she is in nursery now, I have a hard time feeling the spirit at church too. But I always love the nursery kids :)
ReplyDeleteHaha! That's so cute. Sometimes it's hard to feel fulfilled while working in nursery but I think it's totally worth it to hear the cute things those little angels say!

i love your outfit :) also that is so scary about the poison...one time my dog got into it and she had to get her stomach pumped i'm so glad Joony didn't have to!! My little girl is 13 months and 27 lbs...she will prob be like 6 feet tall, so I know how you feel carrying around Joony!
ReplyDeleteGlad you're call to the Poison Help line was helpful and that everyone is safe! Please keep the number handy (1-800-222-1222) and call again if you have any additional questions or concerns. Also - did you know that the experts that answer your calls are physicians, pharmacists and nurses who are certified specialists in poison information? Many of them are also parents too and know just what you're going through at a time like that. If you're interested in sharing your story on the AAPCC blog e-mail info@aapcc.org! Stay safe!
ReplyDeleteHOLY CUTEST OUTFIT EVER!!!!! LOVE!!!
ReplyDeleteThat skirt is to die for! Also, I feel you with serving in the nursery. I served in the primary for more than a year as the pianist right after I got married, and it was really hard. I never got to know anyone in the ward who was my age, and I always felt incredibly lonely. However, there were bright spots with the kids at times, and I really did feel like I belonged there and that I was making a difference at the end -- and then we moved and I got a different calling. Funny how that works. :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE YOUR NEW LAYOUT
ReplyDeleteLove this! I am so with you on the making dinner thing. McKay can eat whatever and I STILL struggle to make dinner. And what a nice Poison Control person! I have had to call on Jax before too.
ReplyDeleteCan I just say I love every single outfit on your blog!?! You have super cute style, something I would totally wear. I love it! Just found your blog, yayy! i'm excited to follow you :)
